Chapter 11

Elizabeth jerked upright as she felt the burn of flame sting her eyes. She pressed a hand to her temple to ward off the pounding, foreign sensation of a headache. Her stomach clenched as pure fury tore through her, a fury that was not her own. Images assailed her, none of them making any sense. Men, women, some barely more than children burning at the stake. Snatches of French, of German, angry voices in Spanish, in Russian, in Hebrew pounded at her head, a flood of history spinning her from reality in a terrifying, dizzying dance of macabre images and facts.

She tried to rise to her feet, staggering back as she was assailed anew, wave after wave washing over her as she saw everything she’d seen before, all over again. Canons firing, bombs dropping from warplanes, Hiroshima burning, Hitler’s rise, a fury of anger, righteous indignation at such atrocities that had been committed. It didn’t end. Her breath was robbed from her as a hand grasped her upper arm and her name was called out in concern. Adam’s voice, usually her anchor, was far away as she tasted the blood of hundreds. Lives and impressions, hopes and dreams of the dead, the damned, the doomed, and the mourned, lives she’d never taken or tasted took up residence in her awareness.

The soothing song of blood warred with the battle cries of the unjustly murdered, centuries of history rattling through her head. She heard a scream, dimly wondered why Adam’s face was so red, why he looked as if he were on the verge of tears. Footsteps ran toward her, dim voices, and then reality faded again as another onslaught came at her. She dropped to her knees, her arms wrapping around her midsection as she sought to subdue the burning in the pit of her stomach as she heard the screams of millions, the lost and confused. And still it went on and on, with no end in sight.

Kai paced outside the door as another of the piercing screams broke the air. It had been hours. Adam’s face was drawn and pinched, and as his fists clenched, he stared at the door of the room Jacob had banished them both from some three hours before. Kai drew in a breath, the uneasiness rolling in the pit of his stomach. His eyes rested on Adam as the blond man spoke.

“Why is she still screaming? What’s happening to her?” His usual reserve threatened to break as he ceased his pacing and leaned against the wall.

He knew damn well what was happening. Jacob did too; it was why he’d firmly shoved them out of the room. Kai’s gaze rested on Adam for a moment before he sighed. “I never have liked you, you know that.”

“I’m well aware, thank you. But that doesn’t answer my damn question.” Adam’s voice was tight.

Kai almost smiled. He would have if worry weren’t gnawing at him. He cleared his throat and drew in a breath.
